MILL WHISTLE Vol. 33 Eden, N. C., May 26, 1975 No. 21 Bunyan L. Thompson of the Bedspread Mill has completed an outstanding record of 50 years of continuous service with Fieldcrest Mills, Inc. He was honored by the management at a luncheon at Meadow Greens Country Club Friday, May 23, which was attended by other members of the 50-Year Club. Mr. Thompson has worked at (several mills during his half- ' century with the company and most of his years have been -spent in weave room Iji'occupations. He currently works (Ias a loom fixer instructor. He was first employed as a [j^doffer at the old Nantucket Mill ij May 25,1925. The Nantucket was ij’making ginghams at the time. -He worked on most of the jobs in •'the Nantucket Mill and later was transferred to the old Rhode Island Mill which was making ] suitings. He worked as a cotton blender and then was employed at the old Lily Mill (later called so Tears Sony Will Distribute Fieldcrest’s Bed And Bath Products In Japan B. L. THOMPSON ... New 50-Year Employee ... the Silk Mill, then Rayon Mill and finally the Synthetic Fabrics Mill). He was a shuttle threader for about four years before entering military service in World War II. He served in Europe for two (Continued On Page Six) On April 17, Fieldcrest was officially introduced in Japan at a ribbon-cutting ceremony at the Sony Building in Tokyo attended by William C. Battle, president of Fieldcrest Mills, Inc., Mrs. Battle and Fred B.Stigeler, vice president of Fieldcrest Inter national along with top Sony management. The Sony Trading Corporation and Sony Plaza Co., Ltd., wholly- owned subsidiaries of the Sony Corporation, Tokyo, have been granted the exclusive marketing and distribution rights for Fieldcrest bed and bath products in Japan. They were accompanied y the Battles on their tours in den. From Eden, the visitors went a to Charlottesville, Va., where they visited the University of Virginia and Monticello. Sir Patrick is the Australian Ambassador to the United States and is one of his country’s top foreign service officers. He has held ambassadorial posts m India and Indonesia and top positions in the Department of External Affairs in Canberra. He was Australia’s Ambassador to the United Nations. Mr Belton is a retired foreign service officer who was Mr. Battle’s deputy chief of mission at the American Embassy m Canberra when Mr. Battle was the U.S. Ambassador to Aus tralia. Mr. Belton later held key posts in Panama, Mexico and Latin American countries. An international authority on birds, Mr. Belton currently is doing a comprehensive work on the birds of South America. He spends most of the year in the jungles of Brazil working on this study. He did a similar work on the birds of Australia when he was there. The Beltons make their home in West Virginia when not in Brazil. excess ot $1.3 billion divided almost equally between export and domestic business. In addition to a carousel display of Fieldcrest mer chandise in the main lobby of the Sony Building, Fieldcrest boutiques have been set up in the Sony Plaza store and the Isetan department store in Tokvo for the initial introduction. Within the next year Fieldcrest products will be marketed through Sony Plaza stores in other cities. A formal reception was also held at the home of Mr. Akio Morita, president of the Sony Corporation, for Mr. and Mrs. Battle, Mr. Stigeler, and Sony executives to celebrate the Fieldcrest and Sony agreement. The affair was also attended by the U.S. Ambassador to Japan, Mr. James D. Hodgson. ScholarshiD Winner Timmie L. Barnes, son of Mr. and Mrs. Leon Barnes and a graduating senior at Kendrick High School, has been awarded the Muscogee Foundation’s annual scholarshin award • The scholarship is worth $4,000 over the four years of college and is awarded on the basis of high school grades and scholastic aptitude for college work, plus consideration of citizenship and financial need. Timmie ranks in the upper one percent in a class of 420 students. He is engaged in many extra curricular activities: president of the senior class, president of the Honor Society, vice president of the Spanish Club, (Continued On Page Eight) TIMMIE L. BARNES Don’t Withdraw CU Savings If you will need money in June and are thinking about withdrawing your Credit Union savings, don’t do it. According to the Fieldcrest Mills Credit Union, you could be better off to obtain a short-term loan instead. Then your savings would continue to earn interest until the end of the dividend period on June 30. If you withdraw the savings before June 30, the dividends that have been accruing since January 1 would be lost. The Credit Union suggests, if you need money before June 30, that you consider obtaining a loan now and let it be paid off out of your share account July 1, after your dividends have been credited. If a sizable amount of money is involved, the interest on the loan normally will be less than the amount of dividends you would (Continued on Page Eight) Beat Inflation!
